What Makes the B-2 Spirit One of the World's Most Capable Stealth Bombers?
The Northrop B-2 Spirit is the U.S. Air Force's premier stealth bomber, capable of delivering conventional and nuclear payloads while operating deep inside heavily defended airspace.

One of the most strategic United States Air Force aircraft, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, is utilized to strike heavily defended targets globally via its long-range strike mission. When more than one bomber flies in formation, it's not just to have a fun day out. It’s because these operations show the global reach America possesses, as it’s not just about sending one jet with a payload of B-52 bombers on standby at forward locations.

With its modest inventory of bombers, however, American stealth planes do have conventional and nuclear capabilities, making the B-2 a very important piece in America’s offensive strategy.

Featuring advanced stealth technology that allows the aircraft to penetrate advanced Integrated Air Defense systems, B-2s minimize exposure of a radar signature. With internal weapons bays and radar-absorbing coatings that provide for its stealth abilities, the bombers can sneak into target zones with greater probability of success than any other bombers.

In combination with mid-flight aerial refueling capabilities, B-2 bombers are capable of intercontinental-style operations without having to depend on bases closer to conflict zones.

The bomber force that is composed of several American stealth planes demonstrates American airpower during its long-range operations. While on formation duty, B-2 pilots train and hone in on complex long-range bomber missions, practice and work up with tanker aircraft as well as allied air forces.

Pilots and ground crew inspect a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber before a mission to ensure it is fully mission-ready.

This validates and demonstrates the Air Force’s capability for global deployment on very short notice. Because global circumstances can change very quickly, the B-2 bomber continues to be a dominant and formidable weapon system for the United States.
