British defence companies are set to gain controlled access to battlefield data collected in Ukraine to develop artificial-intelligence models for autonomous drone swarms, under a new UK-Ukraine defence technology partnership.

### Ukraine’s Battlefield Data Becomes an AI Training Resource

The data comes from Ukraine’s **Avengers AI Labs**, which contains imagery and video captured by Ukrainian unmanned systems using daylight and thermal sensors. The dataset includes more than **6 million detected objects**, including tanks, artillery, air-defence systems, infantry and aerial targets.

The Ukrainian Defence Ministry says the dataset contains more than five million annotated frames and is continuously updated. The information is anonymised and delayed to reduce the risk of exposing current military operations.

### Up to 12 UK Companies Can Participate

Britain’s Ministry of Defence is inviting proposals from up to **12 UK companies**. Their projects must have potential applications for both Ukrainian and British armed forces.

The companies will not simply receive copies of the battlefield database. Instead, their AI models will be trained and evaluated inside the secure Avengers Labs environment.

### AI Drone Swarms Are the Main Focus

The programme is targeting AI systems capable of allowing groups of drones to coordinate with one another, identify threats and adjust their behaviour. Proposed technologies include autonomous target recognition and distributed decision-making that can modify drone routes and priorities without depending on a single command centre.

The UK government says the systems could also be designed to continue operating when communications are degraded, or satellite navigation is unavailable, while maintaining human involvement in operations.

### Ukraine’s Combat Experience Drives Development

Ukraine has accumulated extensive real-world data from modern drone warfare, giving researchers access to battlefield conditions that are difficult to reproduce through conventional testing. Ukrainian officials say more than 30 domestic defence companies are already training AI models through Avengers Labs, with several resulting products being used on the battlefield.

The UK competition opened on September 25, with selected companies expected to begin Phase 1 access after the Ministry of Defence completes its review in November.
