The U.S. Army is expanding its industrial base for the **Hydra-70 family of 70mm (2.75-inch) aviation rockets**, awarding contracts to four companies as part of a broader effort to increase domestic ammunition production capacity. The move comes as the Army seeks additional industrial sources capable of manufacturing Hydra-70 rockets and supporting components.

### Hydra-70 Production Expansion Targets Growing Ammunition Demand

The Hydra-70 remains one of the U.S. military's long-established **70mm air-launched rocket families**. It can be configured with different warheads for various missions, while precision-guided systems such as **APKWS** use the Hydra-70 rocket architecture. Army budget documents for FY2026 included procurement of **166,686 rockets**, highlighting the continued demand for the ammunition family.

The system is also finding relevance in emerging applications. In 2026, the Army supported testing of a **70mm rocket launcher integrated with a TRV-150 unmanned resupply aircraft at Fort Rucker**, demonstrating how established ammunition could potentially be integrated with newer unmanned platforms.

### Army Looks to Build a More Resilient 70mm Rocket Supply Chain

The production expansion forms part of a wider U.S. effort to strengthen the defense industrial base and increase output of high-demand munitions. Additional manufacturers can provide greater production resilience and help the Army maintain a steady supply of rockets as operational requirements evolve.

For the Hydra-70, the objective is not simply to manufacture more rockets. Expanding the industrial base gives the Army additional production capacity, strengthens supply-chain resilience, and helps sustain a weapon system that continues to support both conventional aircraft and emerging unmanned platforms.
