U.S. Army Awards AeroVironment $117.3 Million Contract for P550™ UAS Production
AeroVironment's P550® tactical drone combines vertical takeoff capability with long-range fixed-wing flight for expeditionary military operations

AeroVironment Wins Major U.S. Army Production Contract

AeroVironment has received a $117.3 million production contract from the U.S. Army to manufacture its P550™ Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS). The award supports the Army's effort to expand tactical uncrewed aviation capabilities by providing a versatile platform capable of intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), logistics support, and multi-mission operations.

The production contract further strengthens AeroVironment's position as one of the Pentagon's leading suppliers of tactical uncrewed systems, building on its portfolio of battlefield-proven platforms including the Switchblade, Puma, Raven, and JUMP 20.

What Is the P550™?

The P550™ is a Group 2 tactical uncrewed aircraft system designed for rapid deployment and flexible mission execution. Its modular architecture allows operators to quickly integrate different payloads depending on mission requirements, including electro-optical and infrared sensors, communications equipment, electronic warfare payloads, and cargo delivery systems.

Designed for expeditionary operations, the aircraft can operate from austere locations with minimal logistical support while providing commanders with real-time situational awareness across the battlefield.

AeroVironment's P550® UAS conducts a flight test, demonstrating its modular eVTOL design and multi-mission capabilities for future U.S. Army operations.

Designed for Multi-Mission Operations

The P550 is engineered to support a wide range of military missions, including:

  • Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR)
  • Target acquisition and battlefield monitoring
  • Communications relay
  • Electronic warfare missions
  • Logistics and resupply operations
  • Rapid payload integration for evolving mission requirements

Its modular design enables military units to adapt the aircraft quickly for different operational scenarios without requiring major hardware modifications.

Supporting the Army's Modernization Strategy

The production award aligns with the U.S. Army's modernization initiatives focused on increasing the use of autonomous systems to improve battlefield awareness, reduce risk to personnel, and accelerate decision-making.

Uncrewed aircraft have become increasingly important for modern military operations by extending reconnaissance capabilities, supporting distributed forces, and providing persistent intelligence in contested environments.

The P550 adds another flexible platform to the Army's growing portfolio of tactical autonomous systems designed to support operations across land, air, and multi-domain battlefields.

Strengthening AeroVironment's Defense Portfolio

The contract represents another significant milestone for AeroVironment as demand for autonomous military systems continues to grow worldwide. The company has established itself as a leading supplier of tactical drones and loitering munitions used by U.S. and allied forces.

With increasing global investment in autonomous technologies, contracts such as the $117.3 million P550 production award demonstrate continued confidence in AeroVironment's ability to deliver scalable, mission-ready uncrewed aircraft for future military operations.
