Terror Suspects Wanted to Do ‘Big Damage’ to U.S.-Used Air Base, Trump Says

Five men were arrested near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, after British police received a report about three suspicious vehicles apparently heading toward the military airfield. U.S. President Donald Trump said the suspects were seeking to cause “big damage” at the base.

Five Men Arrested Near RAF Fairford

The men were arrested early Sunday on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.

Police established a 400-meter cordon around the area, while bomb-disposal specialists examined the vehicles. Residents from about 85 nearby homes were also advised to evacuate.

Base Used by U.S. Bombers

RAF Fairford hosts the U.S. Air Force's 501st Combat Support Wing and has been used as a staging location for U.S. bomber operations. British authorities have previously authorized U.S. aircraft based there to conduct operations against Iranian missile sites.

Possible Foreign-State Connection Under Investigation

British counterterrorism authorities are examining multiple possible explanations for the incident, including whether individuals may have been acting on behalf of a foreign state.

Reuters reported that investigators were examining a possible Iranian-linked motive, as well as other possibilities, but British authorities have not publicly established who was behind the suspected plot. UK Defence Minister Wes Streeting has cautioned against speculation about the motive while the investigation continues. Iran has denied involvement in the incident.

Suspects Released on Bail

As of September 28, British police said the five suspects had been released on bail following extensive questioning. They have not been charged and remain under investigation as authorities pursue multiple lines of inquiry.
