Taiwan has received the first two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States, beginning delivery of a 66-aircraft order intended to strengthen the island’s air-defense capabilities. The two single-seat fighters arrived at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung on October 2 after flying through Hawaii and Guam. ## First Two F-16V Block 70 Jets Arrive

The aircraft, carrying tail numbers 6727 and 6728, are the first of 66 F-16 Block 70 fighters Taiwan ordered from the United States in 2019\. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense said the remaining 63 aircraft are currently in various stages of production and delivery. The original program experienced delays related to production and software issues. The arrival of the first two aircraft marks the beginning of their integration into Taiwan's air force, with personnel expected to conduct transition training and preparation before the fighters enter regular operations. ## A Major Upgrade for Taiwan’s Fighter Fleet

The F-16V Block 70 incorporates upgraded avionics, radar and weapons capabilities compared with Taiwan's older F-16 variants. The aircraft are intended to improve Taiwan's ability to monitor its airspace and respond to increasingly sophisticated aerial threats.

The new fighters include systems designed to improve detection and engagement capabilities against modern aircraft, including China's J-20 stealth fighter. Taiwan has previously used F-16s extensively for missions monitoring Chinese military aircraft operating around the island. ## Taiwan’s F-16 Fleet Will Grow

The $8 billion U.S. program is expected to bring Taiwan's total F-16 fleet to more than 200 aircraft once all of the new fighters have been delivered. The aircraft will complement Taiwan's existing F-16V Block 20 fleet and other fighter types operated by the air force. Taiwan's air force said it has established a dedicated unit and has already sent personnel to the United States for conversion training. The service plans to progressively build operational capability as additional aircraft return to Taiwan. ## Delivery Comes Amid Chinese Military Pressure

The delivery comes as Taiwan continues to monitor frequent Chinese military activity around the island. Reuters reported that Taiwan's air force has to scramble almost daily to track Chinese military operations. Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes U.S. arms sales to Taipei. Taiwanese Defence Minister Wellington Koo said more F-16Vs would arrive but did not provide a specific schedule. The U.S. State Department has also reiterated Washington's support for Taiwan's security while Beijing has repeatedly called on the United States to stop supplying weapons to the island. ## What Happens Next

Taiwan will now focus on accepting and integrating the first aircraft while additional F-16V Block 70 fighters continue through production and delivery. The program is expected to provide Taiwan with a larger and more modern fighter fleet as it continues upgrading its air-defense capabilities.

The arrival of the first two aircraft is therefore an important milestone in Taiwan's long-running F-16 modernization program, but the full capability will develop gradually as more aircraft, trained personnel and supporting systems enter service.
