SpaceX has been awarded a $1.6 billion contract by the U.S. Space Force to conduct 18 Falcon 9 launches in support of national security missions through the end of 2027. The launches will deploy military satellites supporting the Space Based Sensing and Targeting (SBST) portfolio, which is designed to improve the U.S. military's ability to detect, track, and communicate information about airborne threats in near real time.

The contract was awarded under the National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 program, which procures commercial launch services for defense missions. All 18 Falcon 9 missions are expected to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, reinforcing SpaceX's role as the primary provider of U.S. military launch services.

Supporting America's Next-Generation Missile Tracking Network

The upcoming launches will place satellites into orbit that contribute to the U.S. military's expanding missile warning and tracking architecture. These spacecraft are intended to provide persistent surveillance capable of detecting, identifying, and tracking airborne threats, strengthening the Pentagon's space-based sensing capabilities.

The award also supports broader efforts to modernize military space infrastructure, enabling faster delivery of critical national security payloads while leveraging commercially proven launch systems. Falcon 9's high launch cadence and reliability made it a strong candidate for the accelerated procurement process.

SpaceX Continues to Dominate Military Launch Services

The latest contract adds to a series of major U.S. defense awards secured by SpaceX in 2026. Earlier this year, the company received multi-billion-dollar contracts tied to military satellite networks and space-based communications, bringing its Pentagon-related awards this year to approximately $7 billion.

Despite SpaceX's leading position in the launch market, the U.S. Space Force continues to emphasize maintaining competition through the NSSL program. United Launch Alliance (ULA) and Blue Origin also participate in national security launch procurements, ensuring multiple certified providers remain available for critical missions.

Accelerating National Security Launch Capability

The contract was awarded through a streamlined acquisition process intended to accelerate deployment of military satellites as demand for resilient space capabilities continues to grow. As geopolitical competition expands into space, the U.S. Department of Defense is increasing investment in rapid, reliable launch services to support missile warning, communications, navigation, and space situational awareness missions.
