Poland temporarily suspended flight operations at Lublin and Rzeszów airports on September 17 as its military activated air-defense and radar systems in response to Russian attacks using jet-powered drones against western Ukraine. Polish authorities described the measures as preventive and aimed at protecting the country's airspace.

Polish Military Activates Air Defenses

The Polish Operational Command said military aviation operations were launched in connection with Russian drone strikes on Ukrainian territory near Poland's border. Ground-based air-defense systems and radar reconnaissance were placed on heightened readiness.

The authorities said the operation was intended to protect Polish airspace, particularly areas close to regions under threat. Poland reported no confirmed violation of its airspace during the latest operation.

Lublin and Rzeszów Airports Temporarily Suspended

Poland's Air Navigation Services Agency temporarily halted flight operations at Lublin and Rzeszów to provide freedom of action for military aircraft operating in the area.

Both airports subsequently resumed normal operations after the military threat level decreased. Rzeszów is particularly important because the city serves as a major logistics hub for Western military assistance to Ukraine.

Russian Drone Attacks Raise Regional Concerns

The latest Polish alert follows repeated Russian air attacks against Ukraine, including strikes involving large numbers of drones.

Poland has increasingly scrambled aircraft and activated air-defense systems as Russian attacks approach its territory. The country has also strengthened surveillance along its eastern frontier following previous incidents involving Russian drones.

NATO Faces Growing Drone Challenge

At the same time, Lithuania's air-force chief, Col. Antanas Matutis, warned that NATO is not yet adequately prepared to counter the scale of mass drone and missile attacks being demonstrated in the war in Ukraine.

He pointed to the economics of modern drone warfare, where relatively inexpensive attack drones can be deployed in large numbers while defenders may have to use considerably more expensive air-defense interceptors. He called for investment in cheaper methods of defeating such threats.

Ukraine War Is Reshaping Air Defense

The Ukraine conflict has increasingly demonstrated the importance of layered air defense, electronic warfare, radar networks and low-cost counter-drone systems.

A Reuters analysis published September 17 similarly highlighted concerns among military analysts about NATO's preparedness for large-scale drone warfare, noting that the conflict has exposed challenges in weapons procurement, training and adapting to rapidly changing battlefield technology.

Poland Remains on NATO's Eastern Flank

Poland's latest airport closures did not indicate that its airports had been directly attacked. Instead, the temporary restrictions were linked to Polish military operations responding to Russian strikes on neighboring Ukraine.

The episode nevertheless illustrates how Russia's continuing air campaign against Ukraine can have immediate consequences for NATO members located along the alliance's eastern border.
