# Lockheed Martin Unveils Lower-Cost Patriot Interceptor as Global Air Defense Demand Surges

Air defense systems-and particularly ground-based ones like Raytheon's NASAMS and its predecessors or Lockheed Martin's Patriot system-have received increasing amounts of attention as states bolster their capabilities to defend against ballistic, cruise, and other missiles. 

As countries expand their arsenals to counter growing missile threats, Lockheed Martin has developed a more affordable alternative interceptor-the PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector (PAC-3 ACE)-that can be purchased in greater quantities and at a lower cost than the company's combat-proven PAC-3 MSE. Lockheed Martin announced the PAC-3 ACE at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow.

It said the new missile will cost less than half the price of the MSE but will be interoperable with current Patriot systems, enabling commanders to add a large number of missiles to existing arsenals and inventories at relatively low costs while avoiding modifications to current launchers, radars, and C2 equipment.

**Designed to Increase Air Defense Capacity:**  
  
The PAC-3 ACE interceptor was conceived as part of an “enduring capability” for targeting such a broad spectrum of airborne targets, including not only cruise missiles and aircraft, but also short-range ballistic missiles. It isn't meant to supplant its larger cousin, the PAC-3 MSE, but instead to supplement it.

In doing so, it will give military commanders a "choice," according to Lockheed Martin spokespeople, of which interceptor to use based on the threat they face and the mission they're undertaking. It will provide a lower-cost option and add to what military strategists often call a military’s "magazine depth"-that is, the number of interceptors on hand for extended conflicts-which has proven critical in recent wars where missile interceptors can be expended at very high rates during prolonged engagements.

**Production Expansion to Meet Global Demand**  
  
The company also announced plans to expand manufacturing capacity through partnerships with U.S. and European suppliers. Increasing production is expected to help reduce delivery times while supporting allied nations seeking to replenish missile inventories amid growing regional security concerns.

Flight testing of the PAC-3 ACE is expected to begin in **2028**, with the interceptor designed to integrate into the Patriot ecosystem and the **Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS)**. This compatibility allows operators to field the new interceptor without major changes to existing air defense networks.

**Strengthening Future Missile Defense**  
  
Demand for higher-end air defense has been growing sharply in the last couple of years as countries have adjusted to changes in missile threats and lessons from fighting. The new interceptor is expected to eventually complement the existing Patriot missile to make Patriot systems larger by keeping down costs and to potentially bring about higher-rate production for more Patriot engagements with fewer high-cost interceptor rounds to fight lower-threat targets.

If fielded, the PAC-3 ACE could serve an important role for tiered air defenses, allowing a force to maintain effective layers of defenses against both high- and lower-threat air and missile targets for far less than the cost of an all-high-end interceptor inventory, the company noted.  
  
**A Strategic Shift Toward Affordable Missile Defense**  
  
The development of the PAC-3 ACE is part of a larger trend in military purchasing to prioritize affordability and production volumes as much as outright performance. Today's threats often call for systems that can shoot down swarms of inbound missiles over long durations. Having interceptors available is a crucial capability for success in the battlespace.

By offering a lower-cost missile that works with the existing Patriot configuration, Lockheed Martin will be able to assist users with continuing to conduct defensive missions without exhausting their inventories of high-value missiles.

“It should give more nations, in addition to those in \[the U.S. Military\], the ability to get larger stockpiles of missiles for a set amount of money,” defense analysts have noted. The demand for combined air and missile defenses worldwide has increased, and the PAC-3 ACE could play a major part in it.
