Boeing Secures $75 Million Contract to Begin JDAM-LR Long-Range Weapon Production

JDAM-LR Takes Flight, Bringing Extended-Range Strike Capability to Naval Aviation

Boeing has received a $75 million U.S. Air Force undefinitized contract action (UCA) for initial production of the BSU-111/B Payload Delivery Unit (PDU) for the Joint Direct Attack Munition–Long Range (JDAM-LR). Boeing announced the award on August 5, describing it as a major milestone for the long-range precision-strike weapon.

JDAM-LR Moves Into Initial Production

The contract follows nearly $100 million in Boeing investment in the JDAM-LR program and clears the way for initial production of the PDU for the U.S. Navy. The system is being developed as a relatively low-cost, long-range standoff option intended to extend the reach of existing aircraft-launched precision weapons.

Weapon Demonstrates Long-Range Capability

The JDAM-LR completed its first flight test in April 2026 with the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) at the Point Mugu Sea Range in California. During the test, the weapon demonstrated safe separation from its launch aircraft, compatibility with existing aircraft interfaces, controlled powered flight, and navigation. The test weapon traveled approximately 200 nautical miles before reaching its target.

Designed for Stand-Off Precision Strike

The JDAM-LR is intended to give U.S. forces greater stand-off range while leveraging existing aircraft and weapon interfaces. Boeing says the system is designed to provide a cost-effective option for engaging long-range land- and sea-based threats, potentially complementing existing precision-guided munitions and cruise-missile inventories.

Strengthening Long-Range Strike Options

The production award marks an important transition from development and testing toward fielding. As the United States continues expanding its long-range precision-strike capabilities, the JDAM-LR could provide an additional option for aircraft operating outside the immediate reach of enemy air defenses.
